Government Policies Affecting Healthcare Costs - 1697 Words

Assignment 4 Introduction There have been several failed attempts over the years to control the costs of healthcare. Consequently, a major change in government policy took effect in 2010, with additional implementation in 2014, which is known as Obamacare. Furthermore, there are three main problems with the healthcare system in the United States that need reform, which include increasing costs and unaffordability of healthcare, restricted access to care, and poor quality of care (Geyman, 2012). The purpose of this paper is to investigate the costs of healthcare. Government Policies Affecting Healthcare Costs The federal government pays for more than half of the healthcare costs through Medicare and Medicaid funding (Weeks, 2012). Therefore, a recent healthcare policy affecting healthcare costs is the Affordable Care Act also known as Obamacare. The Affordable Care Act is a law that requires health insurance reform, which alters the way Americans are covered by health insurance and adds financial protection related to the soaring healthcare costs (Freymann Fontenot, 2014). However, the Affordable Care Act protects individuals from insurance limitations and lifetime caps the act also adds increased personal financial liability for individual healthcare costs (Freymann Fontenont, 2014). In addition, under the new policy some insurance plans provide free preventive care services without any coinsurance or copayment charges (Freymann Fontenot, 2014).
